Hotel Gasthof Straub

We've stayed here twice, and each time we asked for apartment A1. If it's available, I'd recommend it. It has a double bedroom, living room, bathroom, kitchenette, dining table, and a balcony looking over the yard. It's nicely priced, pleasant, and clean. The place itself has a lovely rustic cabin feel, with wooden walls and furniture, flowers, and decorations. There's plenty of parking, and Lenzkirch is a good base for hiking in the black forest. I'd suggest renting a car. If you don't feel like cooking, they serve good breakfasts and dinners. The young woman working there, I think her name is Anna Lena?, was really nice and helpful. A couple of things to know: the Wi-Fi is pretty bad. It was inconvenient on our first visit, but the next time we came prepared and didn't mind being off Facebook for a few days. Books and a board game were enough to keep us busy in the evenings. The front door was closed when we arrived, and it wasn't clear what to do. Tourists may not be able to call the owner if they have no connection, so they should explain these times on the website or during booking. Also, there's a church right next door, and its bell rings loudly every 15 minutes from 7 AM. We wanted to get up early anyway, so it didn't bother us much and was even helpful at times. We enjoyed our stays a lot.

I booked a night online by mistake after check-in had already ended. When I arrived half an hour later, the hotel was dark and locked, and nobody answered despite my knocking repeatedly. I had to find somewhere else that was open at 21:00, which wasn't easy in the black forest. The next morning I found they had charged me 136 euros for not showing up, even though I'd been there and the door was locked. I went back to speak with the owner, but she yelled at me and said her husband would throw me off the property if I didn't leave. I'd stay well away from this place.

The staff were friendly, and everything was clean. We had a comfortable room with a balcony, a new bathroom, a lovely view, and a really quiet setting. At breakfast, we sat with our dog in the dining room at the front. That was fine by us, and we were glad he was allowed to come along, since some guests might not like having a dog in the dining room. We'd gladly stay again.

We had a very friendly dinner service, and it was incredibly fast. The restaurant mainly serves hearty traditional food. At check-in the welcome was polite, though quite direct in the German way. The hotel is dated, with cozy rooms in a rustic, old-fashioned style and creaky beds, but our room was very clean and well kept. Breakfast was adequate, with delicious fresh rolls. The price felt okay overall, though the room was rather expensive for what it offered, for example, there was no shampoo. Still, it's perfectly suitable for a night or weekend, and I'd recommend it.
