Lindau and the whole surrounding area are lovely, and the hostel is well placed for exploring. I stayed at the youth hostel in Lindau with my wife and two other couples on a private visit. The rooms were simple, as you'd expect in a hostel, but the bathrooms were clean. Breakfast was fine, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

The common areas, bar included, are impressive and compare well with much more expensive, comfortable hotels. My room was simpler, but it was private and had an en-suite bathroom, balcony, and its own fridge. At just over €41 with breakfast, I think it was a bargain even in the low season. The location is convenient too, just a few minutes' walk from Lindau-Reutin station. I wish I could return in summer and stay several nights to make more use of the balcony and fridge.

We had a really quiet night, even though the hostel was full on the longest Saturday of the year. The buildings are very clean and well maintained, and as parents of young kids we didn't feel out of place among all the teenagers and young adults. Dinner and breakfast were basic but fine. Having them there saved us time and money compared with finding and eating at an outside restaurant, and meant we could spend a lovely evening on a rented pedalo around Lindau.

The common areas are absolutely beautiful, and I think it may be a cheap hostel, though I'm not sure. The rooms need a lot of work: they're hot and stuffy. The food isn't fantastic, even if the buffet style is something most Americans will love. I wouldn't recommend it, but it would definitely be useful in an emergency.

It felt like camping under a roof, and not a good experience. A family room was €200, taxes weren't included, and you have to join the hostel organisation. You also have to make your bed, then strip it in the morning. Much too costly.
