The Medusa

The location was wonderful, the staff friendly, and breakfast had a good selection. I loved the kids’ bunk bed. The room itself felt dated, though, and the bed was a bit small and uncomfortable. The TV didn’t get a good signal, and there was no WiFi despite it being advertised. There was also a serious mold problem under the bathroom floor. You can tell water has been spraying onto the floor for a while.

The best part is the location on an incredible island in the middle of the lake. The building is old and lovely, and the interior has been renovated, though not to especially high quality. It was clean, and breakfast was pretty standard.

We spent one night at The Medusa and have no intention of returning. The breakfast was OK, at least a positive, but the rest was disappointing. The hotel is in the very center of Lindau’s old city, surrounded by sights and overcrowded restaurants. Dropping off and collecting our luggage meant bravely ignoring traffic rules. Parking is possible about 1 km away in a public lot for €8 per day. There was no air conditioning. Opening the windows let in mosquitoes, with no screens, and the constant noise of tourists. With them closed, the old furniture smell and hot, damp air took over. The bathroom has no window, and its ventilation had to run all day to keep the sewer smell from coming back in. The shower head sprayed in every direction, and the bathtub had an old elephant-ear style shower curtain. The beds had clean but old, overused pillows and grayish sheets. The internet didn’t work at all, and the passwords we were given didn’t connect us to Medusa’s open WiFi.

It’s a nice hotel in a beautiful city near Bodensee, but the price felt high for what was offered. I paid about €85 a night for a single room and expected more. The reception closes at 8 pm, and breakfast was average.
