Hotel Jauch S La Wen

Our hotel rooms had a couple of basic things missing, a bottle of water in one and glasses in the other. Checking out just one room a day early also took three explanations. The restaurant service was even worse. We waited 50 minutes for two desserts despite the place being quiet, and had to get up to pour our own wine while several waiters passed by. We asked for water glasses one at a time, and one person had no cutlery when the food arrived. The risotto was overly salty and lacked other flavor. When we mentioned it, the waitress just said “ok,” with no apology, and the nearly full plate was charged without any discount. The food overall was average. I hope the restaurant addresses these service problems.

The rooms were spacious enough and really clean, and there’s parking on site. It’s a quiet, relaxing place, and the staff were amazing at both dinner and breakfast. Thanks to everyone running the hotel for all the great work.

Ask for a room away from the main road, since those rooms can be noisy. The surroundings aren’t especially remarkable, though the vineyards near Bötzingen are just a five-minute drive away. Pets are welcome, with dogs costing €20 per night. The owners were lovely and very hospitable, the rooms were spotless and recently modernized, and dinner was delicious. Breakfast was fresh and European style.

The garden is picturesque and peaceful, and the food itself was genuinely great, though expensive. I’m reviewing only the hotel’s restaurant, where I had lunch, and I understand that running a restaurant in unpredictable times is difficult. Still, I waited over 90 minutes for my meal. A warning beforehand would have helped, as would more than the standard appetizer after 20 minutes and a few pieces of bread. The response was just a half-hearted excuse, without a proper apology or much understanding. I wouldn’t expect normal service speed at the moment, but the staff and management could have handled the delay far better. I also waited 15 minutes in 30° heat before anyone brought a menu or asked if I wanted water, despite paying well over 30€ for one course. It didn’t seem to be a staffing problem, since each waiter had only about three or four tables, which seemed reasonable. I feel a bit bad posting this because the kitchen staff did such a good job. If you’re reading this around 2023, go ahead and eat here. If COVID is still around, though, expect slow, unapologetic service and management that may take at least 10 minutes to bring a bottle of water. For such an expensive place, I expect considerably better.
