Haus Sonnenruh

A comfortable, quiet house and an excellent breakfast.

We'd book this place again and can definitely recommend it. The hostess was very nice and friendly, and breakfast had lots of variety. The rooms were cozy and clean, and the beds were perfect for sleeping. When we showered for the first time, water leaked from the shower head and splashed out of the cubicle. We told the hostess right away and she fixed it the same day 👌.

The view of the Karwendel Mountains is breathtaking. The house sits on a hillside, so getting there involves climbing several steps. The new apartment showed almost no wear and had two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen, with an en-suite bathroom and toilet for each. The bathroom is modern and has a rain shower. Both bedrooms open onto the spacious balcony, which also connects to the living room, so you can get outside from there too. The price per night feels entirely fair for what you get.

The location deserves five stars, but the rest was disappointing. We've stayed in lots of places in Bavaria, and while this one was nice, it didn't have any warmth or anything special about it. Things in Mittenwald felt odd in general. For instance, we had to ask for our visitor's cards, even though they should have been given to us right away or at least by the next day. You want to use the bus and cable car, after all. We spent two weeks in the upper Sonnenruh. Hauling every suitcase, box, and other item up from the parking lot was a real chore, and it isn't suitable for older people. You need to know that in advance. There were cobwebs in the corners, which we vacuumed ourselves and didn't consider a big deal, but the clumped pillow was unpleasant, and some things were quite worn. Wi-Fi upstairs was usually weak and sometimes absent altogether, and on the balcony it was practically nonexistent. The repeater is in the basement, so no wonder. We had to sleep with the windows shut for both weeks, even though there were lots of mosquitoes and not a single window had a net. That's pretty rare, maybe even unheard of. Garbage is taken to the basement, and a damp, musty smell comes from there and fills the stairwell. The basement rooms, including the laundry room, didn't make a decent impression either. The “terrace” in front of the house wasn't inviting, and nobody seemed to use it. Around the yard, chicken coop, and old houses, a lot was simply in disrepair. It felt past its best days, and on balance I don't think it was worth three stars. Maybe they've lost interest, or maybe there's another reason. We made the best of it, and other people may just mind these things less. The pictures always look good, and everything may have been new when they were taken, but what we saw in reality, including behind the scenes, wasn't what it had looked like.
