Hotel Schloss Wilkinghege

The madame and monsieur who run this historic hotel were kind and enjoyable to meet. It's set in a serene atmosphere and has a lovely scene. I loved the experience and definitely recommend it.

The room was nice and breakfast was quite good, but the stay was an incredibly unpleasant experience. On arrival, there was barely any reception. We walked into the castle hall while guests were having drinks, maybe for a wedding party, but nobody came over to explain anything. We took a deep breath, crossed the reception area with our suitcases, and went up a long staircase to an unmanned reception. I was clearly struggling with the bags, so someone eventually came after us and helped us to our room. The worst part came when we left. I was charged €120 for parking at the charging station on hotel grounds, at 18 cents per minute, even though parking elsewhere was free. The charge was in very small print on a pole, easy to miss when parking there in the evening as a hotel guest. The receptionist just referred us to the municipality, saying they had placed the pole on hotel land. Why not make the charge clear or offer a solution? The pole was surrounded by free parking spaces on their grounds, yet they wouldn't take responsibility. I never want to return. For a posh hotel next to a major road with bizarre parking costs, I'd rather go to a world city where there's something else to do. Rip-offs!

This little hotel was the highlight of our Northern Europe anniversary trip. We booked two nights, and the staff went well beyond FIVE STAR service. They even kept speaking German despite our limited ability with the language. The rooms were fresh and very clean, and breakfast was as good as any we had on the trip. We're planning to come back for a full week next year.

The restaurant food was outstanding and worth the slightly higher price, and the dining room itself is worth seeing. At breakfast, served in a beautiful old cellar, there was a good choice of fresh food, tasty coffee, and things like omelettes made to order. The suite was very comfortable and spacious. I wasn't keen on the window blinds, though, since they let in too much light for someone like me who likes to sleep in the dark. There are enough parking spaces for guests. Schloss Wilkinghege is a beautiful place for a quiet night. Although the B54 is about 100m away, I slept well and didn't notice it.
