After a full day of hiking, our group of six needed a bathroom break and a glass of wine. They greeted us warmly at this lovely winery, let us taste wine before choosing, and welcomed us into the garden. There’s sun and shade, plus beautiful views of the Mosel and the nearby church. We bought bottles to take away and hope to return. If you want wine after they close, there’s a vending machine.

The garden overlooking the Mosel is lovely, and the idea behind the wein automat at Weingut Amlinger & Sons is a good one: let people enjoy a drink after closing while still selling wine. In practice, the machine didn’t work for everyone. We tried for several minutes without luck until another customer managed to use it and helped us. We saw the same thing happen to several others, and eventually the machine stopped working altogether. It was only half stocked just after the weingut closed, so choices were limited too. In our view, the machine’s unreliability and low stock are a missed chance for the business to earn money and keep customers satisfied.

We ended up taking home a few bottles after a really nice tasting. The host was friendly and talked us through each wine, along with some good stories about the harvest and how the weather affects it.

We went for a tasting in August and really enjoyed the good variety. Everything tasted very good, and we left with several bottles of "Schwarzriesling Rose trocken" and "Schiefer Riesling trocken".
