Hotel Zur alten Mühle

Trout is the specialty here, and they raise their own fish in breeding ponds. The service is really friendly. It’s an interesting place to try, though it’s best to reserve since so many people want to eat here.

The rooms were spacious and clean, and we had a great stay. The restaurant is excellent, especially its outstanding fish specialties. I really recommend the place.

We expected more from this four-star hotel. We don’t often stay in four-star hotels in Western Europe, so we were a bit disappointed. We stayed at the hotel and also had dinner, and I think they should be judged as two separate businesses. You can’t really assess the hotel if you’ve only eaten at the restaurant. Breakfast was fine, and the hotel was very clean. Our room on the second floor was tidy, but it was beside a railway and above the restaurant kitchen. There was no air conditioning, so we had to keep the windows open, and when we first went in, we could smell fries and fish from downstairs. The lobby is at the restaurant bar. The main letdown was that there was no bar where we could have a drink in the evening. The restaurant only opened in the evening for reserved meals, at the booked time slot. If you smoke, be aware the hotel was locked and the parking lot pitch black after 22:30, though your room key could unlock the outside door. We had a nice evening at dinner, but it was a little expensive for our budget. We were unlucky to be there with groups of local people celebrating an anniversary. They were quite noisy, and some even made video calls on their phones. Our trout was also overdone and dry. The location is excellent as a starting point for hikes.

I’ve been staying and eating here for twenty years, and the consistency is what keeps bringing me back. The family who own this restaurant and hotel have wonderful staff. The rooms are traditional and very clean. Their fresh trout comes from the farm on site and can be prepared in more ways than you can imagine. Seasonal dishes are always good too, like goose around Christmas.
