Hotel Lekker

The road outside makes it easy to visit the nearby villages, but traffic wasn't loud or bothersome. Everything we wanted to reach for wine tastings and shopping was close by, and we had no trouble loading it all into the car. We came for a long weekend just after the floods in the Rhineland-Palatinate area, a difficult time for local people. We enjoyed our stay and were satisfied overall, though a few things could be improved. The hotel and restaurant have a lovely modern look. Our room was very spacious and nicely decorated, with a new bathroom in mint condition, a walk-in closet, and even a crib. It would be nice to stay again if we have a child someday. But the room was beside the entrance, so we could hear everything through the door. The bed felt hard to us, and the pillows were too soft, so we didn't sleep well the first night. I should have asked for two extra pillows sooner. We had the tasting menu with wine pairing at the restaurant. The decor was nice, and the chef-owner's menu was creative. A few dishes weren't to my taste, but we really enjoyed dinner. Breakfast was varied and balanced, with options for a hot meal, something cold, or something healthy. And if you're visiting from the Netherlands, don't miss the HAGESLAG, nicely done by the Dutch owner. We'd give the hotel 7/10.

The only real annoyances were that breakfast didn't start until 8, which felt late when we wanted to get going early, and the bike shed doubled as the rubbish area. It smelled strongly of rotten garbage. Otherwise, our room was huge and clean, with a very large bathroom area and, finally, enough shelf space.

The room was comfortable and the location was excellent, but the rest of our overnight stay as a couple travelling with e-bikes was a letdown. We learned the restaurant would be closed, but the management or reception didn't answer our repeated emails asking for dinner alternatives until the last minute. By then we'd booked in Piesport, 5-6 km away. We arrived around 15:30, were shown our room, and were told where to leave the e-bikes in a wooden shed. The manager or owner eventually mentioned some nearby restaurants. I said I'd talk it over with my wife and decide later, since we didn't want another pizzeria. After freshening up, we went to get our bikes at 17:10, but the shed was locked. Reception was locked too, despite a sign saying it was open until 18:00. We called both numbers on the notice. The manager was extremely unfriendly and refused to come back to open the shed, saying everyone had already arrived. I had to threaten to break it open to get our bikes and charge their batteries. He finally returned at 17:55 and unlocked it. His attitude was appalling. A coded lock like the one on the hotel entrance would have avoided the problem. Breakfast was acceptable, but the waitress was unfriendly and needs to learn to greet guests and smile.

The food at Lekker is delicious and looks great too. Definitely worth trying, you won't be disappointed.
