Hotel Haus am See

The food made the evening for us, with local dishes and ingredients given a creative lift while still keeping their roots. Everything we tried was full of flavor, and we enjoyed every dish. We were seated beside the lake among the flowers on a beautiful summer evening, sharing wine and a meal. The team looking after us suggested a bottle that was just right, and the service stayed warm and attentive throughout. A lovely place to stop during a day by the lake.

The trouble came at the very end. We’re from the US, and the restaurant’s card machine wouldn’t accept US cards. We were told Swiss cards don’t work either. Calling the owner didn’t resolve it, and they suggested I go to an ATM. That wasn’t much help in a foreign country with no familiar bank within 100 kms. Luckily, I had enough Euros to pay, with a little left over. They could see we were American when we arrived, but didn’t mention the card issue until the bill came. It spoiled what had been a perfect evening, and we won’t return. We’d planned to stay at the hotel too, but have canceled those plans. I’d advise visitors from the US to avoid the restaurant unless they bring enough cash. Until then, everything had been fantastic. We arrived a few minutes before opening for cocktails after getting a reservation. We chose the four course menu for one, and all of it was very good. The eggplant appetizer and white asparagus with the catch of the day were both best in class. We shared the erdbeer white chocolate-strawberry dessert, which was delicious, and Claudia, our waitress, recommended a great local bottle of wine. She did a lovely job, and the views were fantastic. What a shame. Really bad form! 😡

We came for the lake views and local fish, and ended up really enjoying the creative spin on traditional Bavarian food. We were staying at a nearby hotel with a Michelin star restaurant, and dinner here gave us a very similar experience. A friendly, tasty choice for American tourists.

There’s plenty of room to park, and the setting works well for a short break or weekend away. I especially liked the garden by the lake, with a bench right at the water’s edge. The restaurant has a nice selection of fancier dishes, and the atmosphere inside is quiet and cosy. Service was lovely. It feels like a small, caring team that really pays attention to guests.
