We’ll definitely come back. It's a quiet, cozy spot for a winter holiday, right by the Bockenbahn station, and you can conveniently buy train tickets at the hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. On Sunday they even gave us coffee powder so we could have an afternoon coffee in our room. Our room was clean and comfortable, and having a dishwasher meant I could enjoy my coffee from the room's utensils without washing them first. We also liked being able to cook a simple dinner after a long day or eat at the hotel restaurant. Breakfast was lovely, especially the omelet. One small drawback: sometimes we were seated in the smaller dining area at the back, so it's better to ask ahead.
We liked the peaceful surroundings, the clean, pleasant room and the very friendly staff. The restaurant food was really delicious too.
The classic local German dishes at the restaurant aren't haute cuisine, but you can taste the care in how they're made, with family and local recipes behind them. The village of Sorge also has several hikes towards the former inner German border and its local museum. And the HSB station is only a few minutes away on foot, making it easy to explore the beautiful Harz region by train and on foot, including a trip up to the Brocken and on to other connected cities along the 140 km track. You don't need a car here. The owners and other guests are happy to share stories and help you get to know the area. The hotel itself is cozy, and the rooms feel thoughtfully arranged. From the little details to the way the owner welcomes people, the whole place makes you feel at home. He connects with guests and helps them connect with one another too, like a host from an old story. It’s the kind of care that makes this such a lovely place for a Harz holiday.
The nature is lovely, the rooms are comfortable, the staff are friendly, and the food is good.
The hotel's beautiful, peaceful spot at the edge of the forest and the clean, modern rooms had given me a positive impression, but the pricing experience really let me down. The bathroom description also didn't match the amenities listed on the website. I decided on March 1, 2026, to visit the Harz Mountains because the weather was lovely, without booking ahead. I'd looked at the Hotel "Zum Sonnenhof" website the night before and had shortlisted it. When I called anxiously on arrival to ask about a single room for two or three nights, the owner said it was possible and that his wife would come check me in. I was shown a deluxe double room with a terrace, but nobody asked what room category I wanted or told me the price. The previous evening, the website had listed €278 for that room for 3 nights with breakfast. The next evening, I asked the manager about the cost. He said double rooms had the same prices in the off-season, whether or not they had a terrace. He said they would account for single occupancy, but didn't give me a specific price, only saying we'd agree on one. When I went to pay the evening before leaving, I was surprised to see €315 for 3 nights, or €105 per night, plus three breakfasts at €10 each, making €345 total. They said the point-of-sale system responds flexibly to booking demand and adjusts rates. Yet at most three other rooms in the main building were occupied besides mine, and the website still showed €278 for the same services. On March 5, 2026, it was down to €258. I didn't get any other explanation. I paid the bill, since they apparently didn't want to discuss it further. The whole thing significantly spoiled what had been a good impression. Very, very disappointing. I can only recommend booking online in advance, otherwise you essentially set your own prices there.
