Pension am Walde

We picked the guesthouse because it's next to the bike park and we were traveling with our dog. We were meant to stay for a long weekend last May, but left within an hour. The two hostesses were so unfriendly and rude that we couldn't stay. At check-in, the older woman immediately wanted cash, although we'd been told cards were accepted. We hadn't brought enough cash, so she insisted we pay in cash later. After we got settled, my husband and I started unloading our bikes to see whether the park was worth riding that day. The older woman snapped that we had to take the dog with us. We tried to explain that dogs don't belong in a bike park, but she insisted it would disturb the other guests if left behind. We were the only guests there, and I can guess why :-D The second woman joined in and said the dog couldn't possibly stay in the room, even though I'd specifically asked before booking whether we could bring a dog. With both of them getting increasingly unfriendly, we packed up and left. Luckily, I hadn't paid them yet. We travel a lot with our dog and bikes and have never had an experience like this before :-D The guesthouse would be ideal for bike park visitors, but I wouldn't recommend it with hostesses like that.

The house is in a beautiful area, with lots of nearby leisure activities and good restaurants. I expect to come back to the region, but I'll stay at another guesthouse or one of the many nearby campsites. The owner is extremely friendly, though very pushy. It felt less like staying at a guesthouse and more like being her private guest. A chat now and then is fine, but she approached us constantly. We were also told not to take the keys with us, which I found suspicious. There were no safes in the rooms, so I kept worrying about my valuables and had to carry them around. The listing said every single room had its own toilet and shower. Our room had a shower and sink but no toilet, with shared toilets in the hallway. That would be fine if we weren't paying for a toilet and the other facilities. The price didn't match what we got. Breakfast cost €15, but we could choose only one drink, coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. There was plenty of expired food too, including Nutella from 2021 and butter from 2022. The interior looked more like a hotel from 1932, though I suppose you're only there to sleep. The neighbor's dog barked constantly, and it was just as bad the next day. The guesthouse is listed as a bike park partner and is right nearby, but there were no proper bike parking spots or a way to lock the bikes securely. We were told to lock them together in the front garden. There was no security beyond our own bikes, and we weren't allowed to use the only fixed locking point.

The bed was very comfortable, and the room was clean. The staff were very friendly, and the location was quiet. Unfortunately, I had a room at the edge of the building where the Wi-Fi wasn't very good. It was also quite cold when I arrived, though the electric heating warmed it up fairly quickly.

We enjoyed our one-night stay as a couple during a two-day motorcycle tour through the Odenwald forest. The guesthouse sits idyllically in the middle of nowhere, and a very nice older lady runs it. The house is very old, with furnishings that could almost be called antique, but everything is clean and well cared for. 👍
