We came away very disappointed, mostly with the service. We waited a long time without being noticed, while nearby tables were being served, including people who arrived after us. We felt disrespected during the visit. I can understand higher prices given the mountaintop location, but the food didn’t make up for the poor service.

The view was something else. The staff were great and spoke English, Czech, and German. And the alcohol-free Erdinger Weiss on tap was surprisingly, really tasty!

Hochwaldbaude Because I have trouble walking, we took the roadtrain up to the top. The small eatery by the tower was closed, so we went to the larger one. There was a €1.50 tower fee. The low cloud eventually lifted, and the views were great. There’s extensive restoration going on; the steps are a bit wonky, but they’re being worked on. I’ll come back to see how it’s progressing. The menu is posted by the door, so you can check prices before going in and avoid surprises on the bill. We found a table, and the waiter brought us menus. Other reviewers seem to have given him a hard time. He was a little curt, but efficient, and our small toy sheep, Mini-Me, eventually got a smile out of him. This isn’t the top of the Zugspitz, with a huge eatery, lots of staff, and a bigger budget. We ordered one large and one small beer. It wasn’t watered down, despite what some other reviewers said. UK prices would have been more than the equivalent of €5 for 0.5l. The warm streudel came with cream and ice cream, was a generous portion, and tasted very nice. It was probably microwaved, but keeping an oven on all day doesn’t seem practical here. My partner’s camembert looked and tasted great too. Prices are high, but the place is off the beaten track and getting supplies up there can’t be easy. After Covid and inflation, I can understand it. If reviewers are unhappy with the prices, they could eat in Hain or Oybin, where prices are about the same, when those eateries are open. This place doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t. If you can walk and want a great view, go. Please support the smaller businesses.

Such a cozy, clean place to stay, with incredible views and a really welcoming host. The homemade cake was delicious ❤😋
