Am Paulusbogen

We were happy and grateful for the experience, and we'd come back if we're in Passau again. The food is bistro style, really tasty and modern without being overcomplicated. They took my allergies seriously, which can be challenging for me and for the restaurant. There was a bit of miscommunication on our second night, but they fixed it with a smile and an apology. The staff were lovely. We returned three nights in a row after my dad spotted the place on a midday walk around Passau, checked the menu, and recommended it to us. We wondered whether the location and view or the food justified the price. Turns out, both did. It's right in the old town beside the Danube, with an amazing view, and if you're lucky the terrace flowers are in full bloom. You can book a table online, which isn't a given in Germany. Inside, it's warm, inviting, clean, and modern. The music was excellent on Sunday and Monday. The service was beyond excellent. The waitress with the Mia Wallace hair cut deserves a raise. She was the most competent waitress I've met in at least 10 years: perfect English, professional, attentive, double-checking orders, and funny. I even considered asking for her details so I could hire her one day.

We came to Passau for a short trip, and this hotel was just right for a couple. Small, well equipped, and perfectly located in the middle of the old town. The bathroom was compact but cleverly laid out. Breakfast was delicious.

We asked for a table outside at Paulusbogen, and the staff acted as if it was a huge burden. The person serving us, who seemed to be in charge, was shockingly rude and unwelcoming. They said in a condescending tone that they'd wanted to close the terrace two hours earlier but were still taking customers. I understand they may have been tired or overwhelmed, but they could have explained politely or apologized. Instead, we felt like a nuisance. The encounter ruined our mood and what should have been an enjoyable outing. Dining is about service and how customers are treated as well as the food and drinks. Even in a difficult moment, a smile or friendly word can make a difference, and that was completely missing here. I have no intention of returning and can't recommend Paulusbogen. Unless being treated poorly and having your mood ruined sounds appealing, choose somewhere else. There are plenty of places nearby that treat customers with respect. Save yourself the disappointment and frustration and avoid Paulusbogen.

Sunday lunch here was wonderful. The food was excellent and the desserts were amazing. It's a great place for friends to meet, have a good meal, and talk. I had some really good goulash, the best I've had in a long time.
