Hotel & Restaurant Waldschloss

I didn't stay at the hotel, just went for dinner. The building has a very nice location and is classically furnished, though it feels a bit dated. It seems well maintained and high quality. The food was tasty and nicely presented, and the prices were excellent for what we got. Definitely worth another visit. Service could improve, especially in attending to smaller groups. When we did get help, it was polite and complete.

The room was huge, with high ceilings, wood details, big windows, a table, and a comfortable bed. The bathroom was spacious too, with soap, showergel-shampoo, towels, a hairdryer, two glasses, and a chair. Wifi worked, and we got the password at check-in. We slept well and enjoyed opening the windows to hear the birds. Breakfast had a good selection: fresh cheeses and meats, fresh bio eggs from a nearby farm, according to the man at reception, plus strawberries, watermelon, fruit salad, nuts, and three kinds of yoghurt. The coffee machine offered lots of hot drinks, and there was orange juice, multivitamin juice, milk, and water. The price with breakfast was reasonable. Getting to the Hotel over Mariahilf means a very steep climb, so plan your route with that in mind. There's parking in the courtyard and two entrances. One has a couple of steps, while the back entrance is level and opens with the room key, useful when coming back late. There's no lift and no hotel room on the ground floor. The restaurant and beergarden are disability friendly, including a disability toilet, but an overnight stay isn't accessible. Passau's inner city is a 10-minute drive away, or 20 minutes if you avoid the steep hill. The nearest and cheapest fuel station is on the austrian side, about five minutes beyond some amazing countryside views. I'd recommend the place, though the lack of disability friendly facilities means we unfortunately don't expect to return. Thanks for the nice stay!

The building is beautifully appointed and renovated, and the beer garden beside the restaurant is in a wonderful spot. We didn't try the restaurant, since it wasn't listed anywhere and we couldn't find reviews. Management might do well to list it separately as a dining venue. Our 3-bed-room was clean and spacious, with a very large desk, very good beds, and a gigantic flat screen TV. Still, it wasn't very comfortable: there was just one chair, no sofa or armchair, and towel racks for only two. We enjoyed the breakfast, especially the cappuccino and soft boiled eggs, and the service was very nice. There were some small lapses: the mini bar hadn't been serviced and stayed that way for our entire two-day visit, even after I told reception within 30 minutes of checking in. We also only got shower gel and the internet password after asking. None of this is a tragedy, but for a high-priced 4-star property, we expected more. It felt closer to a 3-star hotel costing a third less. I hope management fixes these things, because this could be a gorgeous property. Summer 2019 notice: construction work ran Monday through Friday during daytime working hours. Approaching from Passau required a detour, but the direct road was open to hotel and restaurant guests during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

The rooms are quite large and clean, and the staff are friendly and communicate efficiently in English. Breakfast was fine, though it didn't have a special treat like delicious eggs or a nice cup of Joe. The hotel is right on the Germany-Austria border; some people say it's in Passau, others disagree. The bed was a bit worn and could use a mattress change, and the bathrooms could use a better air conditioning system. A good hotel, though not exceptional.
