Hotel Zur Traube

Please bring euros, since we couldn't find anywhere that accepted credit cards. There's a bank across the bridge on the Luxembourg side, where we withdrew cash. The hotel is right by the border with Luxembourg, and we had fantastic pizza and pasta there, along with a lesson in cheese. That's another adventure, though. Back at the hotel, breakfast was included, plentiful, and amazing, and there's a busy fruit and vegetable stand on the property. The staff were attentive and spoke English, which helped since I don't know French or German. Still, a please and thank you in the local language goes a long way. My wife made the booking through their Hotel Points system. As a Jamaican man of colour from outside the region, I felt welcome and at home. Please visit this place.

We stayed in both parts of the hotel during our two days. The premium rooms in the newer section were much nicer and quieter. The comfort rooms are in the old building by the road, and ours was noisy. It was almost beside the breakfast room, so we couldn't sleep past 7 AM. Staff kept opening the door between the two sections despite the manager having agreed that they wouldn't. That was really annoying and suggested a poor relationship between management and staff. Room 4, at the back, was a little better for traffic noise, but its window looked onto walls and a blind room, with no view. The hotel sits by two busy roads, so traffic noise is an issue. In the bathroom, the shower didn't close properly and left the whole floor wet. The soap and shampoo bottles were tiny for a 3-star hotel. Both kinds of rooms felt at least 10% to 15% overpriced for what you get. The restaurant and its staff were genuinely good. We ate there on both nights and really enjoyed the food and service. I booked after reading the reviews, hoping for a good option since Remich seemed to have no hotel or restaurant services, and many other places were terrible or closed. I hope the management can keep the hotel open, as the rest of Remich already seems closed. We'll gladly skip this area next time and look elsewhere.

Breakfast was very good, with plenty to choose from: juices including fresh-squeezed orange, cheeses, honey, coffee, tea, fruit, and fruit salad. The hotel was clean, the staff friendly, and WiFi and parking were free. I gave it four stars because there was no air conditioning. The price was reasonable, and lower than in Luxembourg, even though Luxembourg is less than 2 km away.

The rooms were newly renovated, nicely decorated, clean, and comfortable. We had a standard single and a "Komfort" double with family. My family slept better in the Komfort room at the back patio. The standard single faced the street and was much too noisy: heavy traffic, mostly HGVs, began around 5:30 am, and the busy main-road intersection with Luxemburg was only about 50 meters away. Breakfast was fine, and so was the service. We were pleasantly surprised by the on-site restaurant at dinner, where the staff were always friendly. Looking back, half-pension probably would have made sense. There was never anyone at reception while we were there, so we had to wait for the chamberpesonnel to be around if we had a question. I'd stay again, but definitely not in the standard room.
