Wein Erlebnis Hotel Maimühle

The food was okay. For me, the place was a little too close to the trains.

We had a lovely time on the terrace, with friendly service and good food. It’s a good restaurant for local dishes, and I’ll return.

I wanted this place to be good, and the hotel itself was very clean and modern, just inside the German side of the French-German border. But the traditional German dinner I’d hoped for was a letdown. My goulash was bone-dry, while my partner’s schnitzel seemed like the tourist version compared with the plates locals were getting at a nearby table. Service was poor too: the food took ages, and paying the bill dragged on. Looks aren’t everything.

After two other places turned us away because they had no rooms, we were lucky to find Hotel Maimuehle. We were the only guests and were glad to be there. The staff were friendly and bilingual, which helped with my poor German. Our room was spacious, the bed was comfortable, and after a long day on trains and buses, the shower felt wonderful. Breakfast was generous: soft-boiled eggs, a huge plate of assorted meats and cheeses, mixed bread, juice and coffee.
