Pension Birkenhof

The design at Birkenhof feels just right, even though the bed and breakfast is a bit dated in some ways. The couple who run it are very nice, and the breakfast was one of the best I've had at any B&B. It's conveniently close to Neuschwannstein, too. Add in a great price, and you can't go wrong.

It feels like staying in someone's traditional Bavarian home. The place isn't modern, but it's traditional and well kept, and breakfast has that same homey feel. The staff and owner were very friendly and helpful. It's also conveniently close to Pfronten-Ried train station.

We stayed at the end of July 2009 and really enjoyed this hotel and B&B, run by a very nice couple. The rooms were quite comfortable and very clean, and breakfast was great. Pfronten is a quiet, beautiful place, with Neuschwanstein Castle (Fussen), Garmisch, Bodensee, and Munchen nearby. Highly recommended.

Pfronten itself was the real gem for me. It's a quiet alpine town where you can feel spring in your step, and the warm, welcoming restaurants make it easy to want to stay longer and explore. I hugely recommend Braugasthof Falkenstein. A quick Internet search will turn up plenty of 'ideal Bavarian towns you must visit', but which one has the biggest impact depends on you. The hotel is basically a well-kept homestay, and being one of the highest rated places in town makes it worth considering. It's not quite what you might expect, since Pfronten remains a small town despite drawing plenty of tourists. The older couple who run the place may take a little getting used to. At first the man might seem suspicious of foreigners, but he becomes as pleasant and talkative as anyone you'll meet in Bavaria. His wife doesn't speak English, so ask him if you have questions, unless you'd feel guilty watching her hobble determinedly across the hotel to answer them. Breakfast is limited, so keep expectations low, and some people may find the rooms cramped. Once you settle in, though, they feel cozy, and nothing is glaringly bad.
