Villa Sonnenburg Gästehaus

Lovely place, but that hill is a challenge. You really need a car to get there, and taxis cost a lot.

The location worked really well for exploring Saxon Switzerland, with the national park nearby and plenty of options for walks and day trips. Getting into the house means climbing a few steps, but they were lit in the evening, which felt reassuring late at night. Villa Sonnenburg gave our family of six loads of room. The first floor alone seemed to be at least 100 square meters, and we all felt comfortable. The house is large and beautifully laid out, clearly renovated with a lot of care. We loved the big kitchen, which had everything for cooking, as well as a washing machine. The dining table in the hallway became a favorite spot for meals and planning the day. Each room had its own heating control, so we could keep the bathroom warm while taking a bath. Ms. Kirschner welcomed us warmly when we arrived, checked that everything was all right, and asked about our stay when we left. That personal attention meant a lot to us. We had a wonderful time, and would gladly return and recommend it.

Getting there took a bit of care: my TomTom found the street but not the house number, while Google Maps and OpenStreetMap were more accurate. The carport is a few meters uphill from the house, though we could load and unload in the courtyard. The villa guesthouse sits on a large, naturally wooded property above Bad Schandau, with a superb winter view of the town and the Elbe. In summer, greenery may partly block that view, but there's more of it around then. We were there in freezing weather, and the heating handled it easily. The large terrace was unused at that time of year. Inside, the place has been extensively modernized and furnished with style and good taste. Some antiques make it feel cozy, and the wall decorations suit both the house's architecture and the region. The kitchen was fully equipped, with quality furniture, powerful brand-name appliances, Meissen porcelain, and properly sharp knives. Beds were comfortable with fairly new mattresses, the bathroom was large and bright, and the Wi-Fi was good. A stylish, cozy base for Saxon Switzerland and Dresden.

We had a long hike while the trails were open again, and would love to return. The apartment was simply wonderful, with high-quality furnishings and everything we could want. It's a beautiful place with fantastic accommodation, and the morning view across Bad Schandau and the Elbe is magnificent.
