Parkhotel Engelsburg

I spent two very relaxing days at this lovely hotel. The rooms were spacious and clean, the spa was amazing, and the gym was sufficient. There isn’t much to do in the village, but if you find yourself there, I’d highly recommend the hotel.

The reception staff seemed very unhappy that I had booked at a special rate. At checkout I was told I couldn’t get free late checkout because I’d booked a cheaper rate, even though I’m a Best Western Rewards member and late checkout is free for members. If the hotel was full or late checkout wasn’t available, they could have told me that, but that wasn’t what I was told. I paid the fee. I stayed here once before and breakfast was fine then, but this time it was poor. There were few bread choices, the croissants were undercooked inside, and the juice dispensers were empty and weren’t refilled. I also paid for three days of parking despite staying two nights. Reception said the parking ticket could only be used once on the departure day. I went out early to pick up medicine at a pharmacy, and instead of helping, they made me pay again. The room I stayed in had no Wi-Fi signal. These are just the things I encountered. After reading the hotel’s reply, I still can’t agree with its explanation. At check-in, the receptionist didn’t explain that I could only use the parking ticket once to leave on the day of departure. I was explicitly told at checkout that free late checkout wasn’t possible because I’d booked a cheaper rate. If the hotel was full and late checkout couldn’t be offered, I should have been told that, but I wasn’t. I didn’t want to escalate things because the receptionist was visibly unpleasant during our interaction. She explained the parking situation three times, and when I said I understood and thanked her, she still wanted to argue. A woman from the back office then tried to lecture me further. I said her colleague had already explained it, and she got annoyed. I’m surprised that instead of making the arrangements clear at check-in, I’m being held responsible after paying for late checkout and an extra day of parking.

The interiors are high quality, the rooms are clean, and the location is great. The staff are friendly too.

There’s a nice beer garden about 50 meters next to the hotel, where you can eat for a good price. Breakfast had plenty of food and lots of choices, and the staff were very helpful. My room was clean and well looked after. If the front yard parking is full, there’s a garage 20 meters across the street. The hotel has a special arrangement there for around 9 euros a day.
