There was little to the rooms beyond a couple of beds and a table that looked like a cupboard. The food was awful too: the mashed potatoes were watery, and everything else was inedible. Breakfast was the one exception, though cereal is hard to mess up.

The bungalows were nice, but the place itself was way outside my comfort zone. We’re from the west, from the richest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, and the long “walk” to the resort ended with me collapsing under my bag and making a huge crash. At dinner, I was shocked that the water tasted like a toilet. It’s in the middle of nowhere, and the weather wasn’t much help either. I couldn’t get into the hunter’s schnitzel, and my girlfriend had really bad skin, like my old friend Günni.

The climb to Zirkelstein was worth it for the view from the top. We started in Schöna, took the train, then walked and continued along the hiking trail. It was hazy, and those 120 steps were a challenge, but manageable.
