For years now, Waldhaus has been our usual choice when we feel like going out for a nice meal. We always feel at home there, and the service is so friendly and personal that they remember our requests by heart. The food is outstanding, from hearty Thuringian dishes to a lighter summer salad or something special we ask for. Ingredients are superb, sometimes fresh from the forest, and everything is prepared with such care. Best restaurant around for us. :)

I find them pretty inflexible. Even if you arrive right in the middle of lunch just hoping for a drink and a slice of cake or something along those lines, they may say they aren't open and don't have cake, and there's nothing they can do about it. I'd rather go to the small cafés that are willing to respond to requests outside their usual hours.

The setting is wonderfully quiet, a good fit for walks and hikes, and we'd gladly come back. The rooms were very nice and clean, and the reception staff were friendly. We ate buffet meals for six days, and I thought the food was truly Michelin-star quality. Book well ahead, though. It's a very good hotel.
