Best Western Victor's Residenz-Hotel Rodenhof

The rooms and beds were spacious and had everything we needed. Reception was friendly and efficient, and we had a blast. After being out all day, we liked going to the pool and sauna. It's about a 30-minute walk to the city, which suited us since we like getting our steps in. The gym is tiny, but has basic dumbbells, a bench, treadmill and bike, enough for a weekend and better than nothing. I can't comment on the food: breakfast and dinner are offered, but we were out all day and ate elsewhere.

The rooms differ quite a bit depending on the class booked, but they're all clean and more than adequate. The staff are lovely, and nothing seems too much trouble. I especially like the usually quiet swimming pool, plus the sauna, steam room and relaxation room. There's also a semi-covered outdoor relaxation area, though it could use a coat of paint before spring. The hotel is on a quiet street, about ten minutes' walk from the railway station in the town centre. It's not quite in the centre, but the calmer spot makes parking easier. That mix of friendly service, pool and wellness facilities, and a peaceful location close to town makes this my hotel of choice in Saarbrucken.

The pool was a nice way to unwind after a day of sightseeing, and the breakfast was more than excellent. The stay was decent enough, though the front desk staff seemed a bit lacklustre. I don't usually like finding cockroaches in my room. When I raised it, I was told the insects fly in from the trees. Fair enough, so if that doesn't bother you, this may be your hotel.

The beautiful lobby and comfortable rooms were positives, but the rooms aren't very modern. This might not suit you if you rely on public transport, travel for business, have lots of luggage, or use a wheelchair. There are elevators, yet you still have to manage steps at the entrance and on the way to at least some rooms. I had two bags and wasn't happy about it. The gym was my main disappointment. I booked specifically because the hotel says it has one. There's a fitness room, but no treadmill, which I consider standard equipment. The elliptical squeaked and wobbled, and seemed like a safety hazard to me. The pool and wellness area looked nice, but the pool doesn't open until 8am. As a business traveler, I simply didn't have time for a swim that late. A disappointing stay.
