Hotel Union Salzwedel

We left with mixed feelings and will look at other hotels next time we need an overnight stay. The hotel itself is lovely, but our room had only a tiny fan on a table in one bedroom, with nothing in the other. It was very uncomfortable trying to sleep in a warm room when it was 28°C outside. We were travelling as a couple with our six-year-old son, and breakfast was disappointing: a dessert plate with three pieces of cheese, five slices of assorted ham, one tomato slice, two cucumber slices, and four bread rolls, with scrambled eggs as the only choice. We weren't sure if that was the hotel's usual level of service.

The next morning, the employee brought coffee as I came downstairs, asked how I'd slept, and chatted with me again. When I asked if I could take some lunch for the road, he came back with a bag for bread. A few hours later I was eating a delicious Hotel Union lunch on my bike ride. The night before, I had arrived in Salzwedel after cycling from the Netherlands toward Berlin, needing somewhere to charge my phone after two nights sleeping in the wilderness. It was a Sunday, and Germany seemed completely deserted, so after a long day I looked for campings, hostels, or Gasthause, since they're cheap. The only place I found open within 10 km was Hotel Union. It cost me 60 bucks, a lot compared with the usual 8 I spend on food, but the experience was amazing. I was the only customer that night. The employee and I talked and had a drink until he went home at 21:30, leaving me the hotel keys in case I wanted to go into town. I didn't, because the contrast between the wilderness and having a whole hotel to myself felt amazing. I had a bath, called my family, and enjoyed the luxury of finding only German-synchronized movies on TV.
