We came by for coffee and pastries at Der Engel in Sasbachwalden, Germany, and the Black Forest cake alone made it a memorable stop. The slice was huge, easily shareable in my view, and delicious: chocolate, creamy layers, cherries, and kirsch all in good balance. The staff were warm and attentive, and their traditional clothes added to the feel of the visit. The restaurant is inside a historic hotel dating to 1764, in a village worth visiting in its own right. Inside, the rich wood paneling and elegant, timeless atmosphere give a real sense of its history. I’ve traveled widely for over 40 years and eaten everywhere from mom-and-pop places to three-star Michelin restaurants, so this is my honest take. I’d happily suggest stopping here for a meal, dessert, or coffee while visiting the village. If you’re driving, village parking is a convenient 3-4 minute walk away. It’s a lovely place to pause and enjoy the Black Forest atmosphere.

The food was a real highlight, from breakfast and the set-course dinners to the generous selection of homemade cakes at tea time. Some of it was among the best we’d eaten in a long while. Our room at the back was spacious, modern, quiet, and had a large balcony. The staff were welcoming and very helpful. We’ll definitely return.

We didn’t stay overnight, so I can’t speak to the rooms or accommodation. We did have a great meal, though: everything we ordered from the menu tasted good and was beautifully presented, and there are set menus too. The service was excellent, with professional, friendly staff, and dogs are welcome, which was a big plus for us. I heard the place has changed quite a bit over the years. It now has a modern look and a welcoming atmosphere, and I’d gladly come back.

The team were kind and professional, and our room was spacious, beautifully arranged, and exceptionally clean. Housekeeping deserves a compliment. Breakfast was generous, with good ingredients and scrambled eggs made fresh that were just right. Sleep was another matter. The guests above paced loudly back and forth every 5-10 minutes from 11 p.m. until 2:30 a.m., then started again at 5:30. I kept waking up. I thought about knocking several times, but my fiancé was sleeping peacefully with earplugs, and I was so angry by then that it wouldn’t have gone well. It wasn’t the hotel’s fault, but the vintage parquet means sound carries. Light sleepers may want to ask for a top-floor room or bring earplugs.
