The room was on the small side, but it had everything I needed and was clean, tidy, and nicely decorated, with a personal touch. The night was cool, so I was comfortable even without a fan or air conditioning. From the window, I could see the lovely houses and river, with the green Black Forest in the distance. The hotel is right in the heart of town, and the owner was friendly and helpful, greeting me whenever we crossed paths. He suggested a lovely short hike on the Kirchberg trail nearby, which gave me my first taste of the Black Forest’s quiet. A really lovely stay in a beautiful town. I’d recommend it to solo travelers looking for a comfortable, budget-friendly place for a few days in this peaceful, magical town.

The location makes a great base for local hikes, and getting around by train and bus was easy for us without a car. We also found the nearby museums, cafes, and restaurants very good, and people were friendly everywhere. Michael is a warm, welcoming host. He may not have a detailed guide to every service, but he does his best to help with whatever you ask, so just tell him what you need. There’s a small dinner menu, cooked to order by Michael, and breakfast is available for a reasonable extra charge. We liked starting the day with fresh rolls, cheese, hams, and a boiled egg. Our room was clean and spacious, and it suited our modest needs. A kettle would have been useful for tea or coffee, though we didn’t really miss one, since we usually spent the evening outside on Michael’s terrace, looking at the river over a local beer. The rates are modest and fit the facilities. It’s a homely, informal place right in the heart of Schiltach, and we were sorry when our relaxing stay ended.

Michael made us feel at home with little surprises, including a lovely gift at breakfast. In the evening, he brought snacks out to the terrace with our beer, even though we hadn’t ordered any. He treated us like friends or family and made sure we had what we needed in this picturesque town. This is a gasthof, just as you’d expect. There aren’t unnecessary luxuries, but the stay is comfortable and very reasonably priced.

We only stayed one night, though I could easily have spent a week there. It was such a relaxing, friendly place, and one of the best stops on our two-week trip through Germany, if not the best. The hotel is charming, and the host is awesome. Micheal made me feel like part of the family almost right away. Loved it all.
