Karma Bavaria

The hill views from our room were lovely, and on some days we could hear birds chirping and cowbells clanking. We also had a big balcony, though it could use some maintenance. Inside, the room was clean and well looked after, with a spotless bathroom and a kitchenette that made breakfast and endless cups of tea easy. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. There’s a bar on site and an attached restaurant, now under a different name, which was handy when we arrived late and didn’t feel like looking for somewhere else to eat. There was plenty of parking, but at the weekend some people didn’t park within their marked lots, leaving a few spaces unusable and less room for everyone else.

Housekeeping let the stay down. The utensils weren’t cleaned, the linen wasn’t changed even after we asked, and the coffee machine in the room didn’t work properly. Room service is available, but food delivery costs extra. The rooms themselves were comfortable, spacious, and well maintained, with a relaxing feel. Food was average, and the vegetarian choices were limited. Breakfast was the same every day, which got repetitive on a longer stay, though reliable vegetarian restaurants nearby helped. Schliersee is a picturesque place, with a fantastic lake at the foot of the mountains, and the hotel is an easy walk from the station. The train to Munich central station takes about an hour. We stayed in the last week of September because we wanted to try Oktoberfest in Munich, and had a fantastic deluxe suite with a kitchenette and lovely bathrobes for each of us. The staff were polite and helpful. Steve made us feel at home with his guidance, and Leonie at reception helped coordinate our luggage after the airline lost it in transit to Munich. We enjoyed the cable car up to the mountain summit. Breakfast was delicious, though more vegetarian and vegan choices would be good. The Indian dinner we ordered wasn’t up to the mark and could be improved. We’d like to come back for a longer holiday.

Schliersee itself has plenty to keep you busy: hiking trails, a cable car at Schliersberg Alm with amazing views, and a toboggan run back down. You can take a boat or walk by Schliersee lake, visit Spitzingsee or Tegernsee, and find lots more to do. The locals were warm and lovely too. The place mesmerised me so much that I kept taking photos, even though I don’t usually take many. I’d love to come back in every season. At the hotel, our room was spacious and the staff were kind and attentive. The restaurant food was good, though dinner can get busy, so book ahead. Try the lychee cocktail at the bar, it made me very happy. The hotel is about ten minutes from the station, with Munich an hour away by train. We took a tour from Munich, and the early start was manageable. The hotel even sent us off with a packed breakfast. Karma has done a great job with this property.
