Hotel Waldhaus Ohlenbach

We come back once or twice a year, in summer, autumn, or winter. Even during the Covid distancing period, the owner made it a lovely place to visit, and they’ve since renovated the spa area and upgraded some rooms. It’s quiet, with great walks if you feel like getting out, or you can simply do nothing. The food is excellent, the staff are super friendly, and families of all sizes can enjoy the place, with mountain biking on electric or regular bikes.

The view from the hotel is lovely, and the surrounding green countryside makes for a beautiful walk. Our first two days went really well, thanks in part to the bearded waiter, who was precise, friendly, and great at his job. The staff were generally very friendly. The last night was a disaster, though. Our waiter wasn’t there, and the waitresses seemed inexperienced. We waited around 30 minutes for drinks, had to repeat an order they’d forgotten, and it felt like we were forgotten as soon as new guests arrived. The nights weren’t what we expected, and the stay wasn’t comfortable enough for five stars. The rooms were okay, but there were cobwebs and other things that hadn’t been properly prepared to make guests comfortable. I’d rate the hotel three stars rather than four. I think this was our last visit.

Breakfast is excellent, and the best rooms are the ones in the 30s on the ground floor. The hotel sits beautifully among the rolling hills of Sauerland, but compared with another rural four-star hotel we just stayed at, which charged less, the difference is significant. This place needs to bring its prices down. It’s listed and priced as a four-star superior hotel, though I’d call it a solid three-star. Some interiors are opulent but dated, while others are sparse and rustic. The lower terraces and gardens also need thoughtful design and regular attention.

The views from nearly every room and the fantastic infinity pool are real highlights. The hotel is very close to the ski slopes of Winterberg, and it’s always a pleasure to stay at Waldhaus Ohlenbach. The staff are friendly, the food is great, and I especially enjoy the generous breakfast.
