Pension Zillnhäusl

There’s a great view, plenty of parking, and a bus stop right out front. The location is hard to beat. Mr. Grassl was very attentive to what we needed and even helped arrange a surprise birthday cake for my wife during our stay.

It’s right in the middle of nature, about 2 km from Konigssee and the Jennerbahn ropeway. Berchtesgaden is only ten minutes away, and there’s a good connection to Salzburg on the direct 840 bus.

Super service.

We stayed a week at Pension Zillnhäusl in room 1, which has a corner balcony. Stepping outside to that mountain view was a highlight, and the view of the brass bands playing in the square opposite was wonderful too. The room was cleaner than some 4-star hotels, which deserves a round of applause. It’s simply furnished but sufficient for a stay. We were welcomed warmly and given a friendly farewell. The guesthouse is centrally located in Schönau am Königssee, opposite the town hall. The sights are easy to reach, and there’s a bank, bakery, butcher, and Unterstein restaurant/beer garden across the street. Guests get a card for free public transport, which can save on expensive parking. Keep in mind that Pension Zillnhäusl is a guesthouse, not a hotel, so hotel-level luxury and breakfast selection aren’t to be expected. Breakfast was good, with rolls, cold cuts, jam, yoghurt, muesli, fruit, and eggs. There are some things the owners could improve soon, though. The spring mattress squeaked and was very low and soft, which may not suit everyone’s back. Medium-firm memory foam mattresses could be an inexpensive fix. The TV picture was pixelated because the signal was badly affected by the mountains and weather. Internet TV is available for €4.99. Wi-Fi wasn’t always available, and mobile reception was only adequate. The shower and toilet are quite dated, from the 1970s. There’s a high step into the shower, which could be hard for older guests, and nowhere to put shower gel. A shower with a lower step and a larger sink with enough counter space would be welcome. These changes shouldn’t cost much and would make the room more comfortable. If you’re not expecting luxury or upscale furnishings, it’s a good place to stay, especially given the cleanliness. We can recommend the guesthouse and will book it again on our next vacation. They’d really score points by making those improvements.
