Since 2021, this has been our go-to place for New Year with our large group. We book the whole house and have a great, relaxed time, with walks in the surrounding area. It has multiple rooms and kitchens, clean modern bathrooms and bedrooms, and a robo and vacuum on every floor. There’s also plenty of cutlery on each floor. We just bring groceries and wine.

We found the guesthouse after a seven-hour drive, at the last minute, because the Novotel we’d booked was unacceptably dirty. Arriving late in the evening felt like sinking into a warm bath after a long day. Everything was neat and organized, with a decent bathroom, clean sheets, and a romantic, personal touch. We later learned the owner had done much of the renovation and decorating himself, which explained a lot. It wasn’t a busy time, so we had almost the whole floor and the living room and kitchen to ourselves. The place was quiet, but I can imagine it being a refreshing stay even when fully booked, especially if you’re into hiking or similar activities like many visitors here probably are. As vegetarians, we didn’t find many food options nearby. We had sushi at Koi in a nearby town, which was okay in a good way. Remember to bring cash. Back at the Gastehaus, we mixed some of the different teas in the kitchen into a great homemade brew, then slept very well. The beds were decent too. In the morning we picked up fresh bread from the recommended bakery, which I’d recommend myself now. On the way back, I saw some semi-tame, super cute rabbits wandering around the Gerhardt premises. As an animal lover, I thought that was a lovely extra touch at an already special place. There’s a small lake across the road for swimming in summer, and a road leads straight up into the hills and forest. Everything was frozen when we were there, but the walk uphill looked inviting. Too bad we didn’t have time. I’m glad we found somewhere to rest for the night. If I somehow end up in this corner of Germany again, even though there’s personally nothing drawing us here, I’d absolutely book one or more nights at Gästehaus Familie Gerhardt! I’ve read reviews with pictures claiming there are bedbugs. I think that’s unfair to the owner, because those aren’t bedbugs, but common Reduviidae bugs found in this forest-rich area, and they’re completely harmless. I’ve also seen comments that the owner isn’t around to help or answer questions. You can call him any time for an emergency or if you need your diaper changed, but otherwise I’m sure you can manage on your own. Leave your hotel-chic expectations at home and be open to the experience. I’m sure you’ll have a great stay if you do!

A peaceful place to stay, with free parking for cars and quiet nights. A good choice for people who love wine, hiking, or bringing their dog.

The owner was very friendly and helpful, and the rabbits were even more lovely.

Great rooms for the price.
