Pension am Dom

Getting in was easy even at an odd hour: the entrance downstairs has a combination lock, and the key is kept in a safe. I spent a week on a business trip in the “Steglitz” room on the third floor. It’s an unusual apartment, with a big bedroom and sitting area with a TV, plus a small separate space with a hotplate and microwave. There was plenty of crockery, and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom is compact and modern. Everything was clean and it suited a short stay in Schwerin perfectly. No complaints from me.

We stayed seven days as two people in Apartment Mecklenburg, in a room that didn’t face the back. The location is hard to beat, and it’s very quiet after 10 p.m. Marienplatz, with nearly all public transport lines, is the nearest stop. Edeka and Mecklenburg bakeries are just around the corner, and De Fischjung in the building was fantastic in every way. Forget about the Kartoffelhaus (Potato House), though. The apartments cover three floors; everything was clean and the staff were friendly. Our beds were excellent, and the kitchen was remarkably well equipped, even with a dishwasher. The shower head is still faulty, though replacing it may not be easy.

The location may be cheap, but the rest really wasn’t acceptable, and I can’t recommend the place. We arrived a little early and weren’t allowed in, even though nobody had stayed in the apartment before us. It was freezing inside, and the heating didn’t work properly. It took four hours to get warm enough, and a lightbulb was already broken when we arrived. The Wi-Fi quit on the second day. The photos give a misleading impression, too: the furnishings are sparse and uninspired, and everything feels crooked and uneven. The kitchen and dining area are extremely basic and poorly equipped. Communication was okay. The shower is cramped, with a high tray and very low ceiling, so it’s only really suitable for slim people up to 1.80 meters tall.

The room and bathroom were fine, and the Wi-Fi worked well. We slept comfortably. The one drawback was getting just one towel per person for the whole week.
