Art Apartment - Harz

Couldn’t have been better.

Our lovely hosts looked after us really well, and there was plenty at the accommodation for the whole family. We had a wonderful family weekend in the fairy-tale town of Stolberg, where Thomas Müntzer was born. :-)

The kitchen was well equipped, the bed was a good size, and the location worked well for us. The “art” in the name is mostly movie posters and placards, though there was at least one large acrylic painting in the apartment. What bothered us most was the electrics. They’re based on old wiring, with extension cords nailed on and power strips added in a haphazard way. The fuse tripped several times while we used the oven, which also smelled terrible. There were partially dismantled smoke detectors, and we were told to keep the front door locked. With the old wiring and appliances, that felt like a real danger if a fire were to start, as well as a nuisance. The old windows and outdated tech were disappointing too, especially the TV picture quality and internet speed.

The house is right on the main road, so we couldn’t sleep with the windows open. The apartment was superficially clean, but there were cobwebs everywhere, dirt in the corners, and small accessories left behind the heater. We also had to clean the oven. The bathroom boiler leaked, the towels were wet, and the wallpaper was coming off the wall. The apartments feel dated. The location is very good, right in the heart of Stolberg with a view of the castle. Hiking trails to the Joseph Cross and the Luther Beech Tree are just around the corner. The housekeeper gave us a lovely welcome and took care of what we needed, which was fantastic. We came with three cars and had two parking spaces. For €349 a night for six adults and four children, though, this was absolutely insane. We expected something different at that price.
