Gasthaus Schwanen

The food itself was mediocre for the price. A three-course meal cost €39, which isn't outrageously expensive, but still felt like more than it was worth. Several people in our group ordered steak, and every one came well done, including the ones requested medium. The sizes also varied a lot, with the largest around 30-50% bigger than the smallest. Portions were fairly small. That might have been fine if the meal had moved along, but there were hours between courses. Some of us were so hungry after paying that we ate the hiking food we'd brought along before trying to sleep. If the service had been reasonable, I'd have rated the food three stars. We came for a family gathering, with relatives arriving from all over Germany, and at first things seemed promising. As the evening went on, service nearly disappeared and got more unfriendly. The Biergarten was left unattended for several stretches of over 30 minutes. Most of the staff seemed friendly but badly understaffed. The head waitress was the exception: she was extremely unfriendly and openly hostile. A couple of people ordered starters as their main course, which seemed fine when we placed the order. But their starters arrived along with the rest of our starters. When we asked, the head waitress said, "Es ging vom Ablauf nicht" and walked away without explaining further, apologizing, or letting us ask anything else. When the main courses finally came, about two hours after the starters, those two people had nothing to eat, so the rest of us shared our food with them. We also heard the neighbouring table ask whether they might get dessert at some point, so we weren't the only ones waiting. The head waitress's blunt remarks made it sound like our fault that we weren't being served. At one point she told us that it would be quicker if we sat inside, even though the indoor dining room was full during a pandemic and nobody was asked for proof of vaccination or testing. If the Biergarten is open, it should be served. Another time she said, "Drinnen sind Hausgäste", as though restaurant customers were second-class, despite four of us also staying at the hotel for several nights. We would have paid for the starters and left before the main course if it hadn't been late and if we weren't staying at the hotel. The restaurant was seriously short staffed, and the head waitress's attitude was appalling.

The menu online was out of date because they were having a technical issue updating it, but the food was genuinely great. The homemade bread and ravioli with wild pork were amazing, and the pulpo salad had really tender octopus. We also enjoyed the pork im Honig, especially the sauce. The atmosphere was nice, and the owner was lovely. We arrived almost an hour late, just ten minutes before the kitchen was due to close, and they were completely fine with it. We'll be back.

The villa was a really pleasant place to stay, in such a quiet spot that it was easy to properly relax.
