Naturparkhotel Grüner Baum

The restaurant food was fantastic, breakfast included, and the service was amazing. It’s a secluded spot just uphill from Todtnau, near the huge suspension bridge over a waterfall, so it feels private. We had the largest and nicest rooms of our whole time in Germany, and the setting is just beautiful. There’s hiking all around, plus an alpine coaster and an MTB downhill track in town. I almost don’t want to give it such a good rating and let everyone discover it. We loved our stay.

I just wanted to get out of the restaurant as soon as I could. The food wasn’t great, and the service made the meal even more frustrating. The waiter asked for our order three times, writing it down each time, even though we ordered only two main dishes and a soup. When one dish arrived, we asked for a plate to share with the kids. After the second dish came, we had to remind him, and he answered rudely. Then he kept coming over while we ate to ask about the food, until I didn’t want to talk to him anymore.

The only part of the meal we appreciated was the head waiter trying to fix the bad service, and he kindly didn’t charge us for the wrong dish. I’d ordered a turkey burger with sweet potatoes and an extra salad, but the waitress said that was “too much,” so I ordered the burger without the side. We were told we could take salad from the buffet. I expected leaves, fresh vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers and paprika, oils and vinegar, mixed salads and dressings. There were fresh leaves, but the other options were three ready-made salads and some dressings with no labels, and no oil or vinegar. When the food arrived, my husband’s order was right, but I got a beef burger instead of turkey. The waitress didn’t check on us or ask if things were okay, and we nearly had to go up to her to get the bill, even though the restaurant wasn’t even half full.
