Haus Klosterblick

The only real plus for us was the roomy, easy-to-reach garage for our motorcycles. Everything else was a letdown. I booked a suite at Haus Klosterblick in Kröv through Booking.com and sent three straightforward questions beforehand, but got no reply. When I called, they acknowledged my request and then didn't follow through. The bathroom was cramped and awkward. The shower was tiny, and the toilet sat so tightly between the wall and sink that it wasn't possible to sit normally. We had just two rolls of toilet paper for the whole stay and no refills. The towels were old, stiff, and mismatched. My bath towel was more like an old horse blanket. The room called a suite was just one room, with a narrow double bed, two worn, creaky chairs, a threadbare sofa, and a small table. The refrigerator wheezed so loudly it sounded ready to quit, and there was no promised minibar. The host said the 1970s decor had been unchanged since then, and it showed. Breakfast was poor too: tough rolls, unappealing cold cuts, and hardly any choice. The juice was gone after 9 a.m. and was refilled reluctantly only after I asked. There was no friendliness to speak of. This place was a complete disappointment. Anyone expecting a suite will be badly let down, and by today's standards the accommodation isn't remotely acceptable. I can't recommend it unless you happen to enjoy frustration.

Getting around was easy, with the supermarket and town center close by, and the house looks out over the Moselle River. Our bikes could be locked up safely and kept dry in the garage. The rooms were very clean, and breakfast was more than adequate even though it wasn't a buffet. Fresh coffee and freshly cooked eggs were delicious, with cold cuts and cheese brought to the table. We didn't ask, but seconds would surely have been available. The lovely older couple running the place made it feel welcoming, and it was excellent value for money.

The rooms were clean, but there wasn't even hand soap. As a couple, we also found the welcome quite cold. Nobody showed us the breakfast room or explained anything else, and there was no mineral water in the room or any other way to get drinks. We couldn't even buy a bottle of wine directly from the Klosterblick winery, despite it being a winemaker, to enjoy together on the balcony that evening. Breakfast was meant to run from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., but it still wasn't ready at 8:30. It was a cold, unpleasant stay, and we wouldn't return.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and the rooms have balconies looking over the Moselle River. Having a refrigerator was welcome given the temperatures in the room. Breakfast had everything you could want, and wine was available to buy at the hotel for reasonable prices. The town center is only a few minutes away, with plenty of restaurants, pizzerias, and wine bars at fair prices. Boat trips and horse-drawn carriage rides are available too.
