The garden is lovely, and the staff and service were both great.

What a great location.

The nearby restaurants are excellent, and the hotel’s location is its one saving grace. The rooms are extremely bare and vary a lot in their furnishings. There’s no hairdryer or other basic equipment, and although Wi-Fi is available, it clearly isn’t meant for guests. Phone reception is poor. Tap water swings between scalding and freezing, and my room was so dirty I constantly felt things sticking to the bottoms of my shoes. You have to shut the front door yourself, or it stays wide open. Some room keys also open more than one room. Breakfast was disappointing, with no eggs and nothing hot apart from filter coffee. There’s no hotel parking. The few public spaces can only be used after 6 p.m., except Wednesdays and Saturdays. The city is quick to issue tickets: I arrived at 5:38 PM and got one for parking at 5:41 PM without a ticket. This place really deserves zero stars.

The breakfast really surprised me. They set the table for us and brought whatever drinks we wanted, with service at the table instead of a buffet. The rooms were very well equipped and everything was clean. This hotel has heart, with charm instead of the feel of a modern mass operation. I don’t understand all the harsh reviews. I’d recommend it and would happily come back. :)
