Gaststätte Zum Fährmann

The room itself had plenty of problems. The window blinds barely kept out the light, and a lamp just outside kept flickering on and off several times a minute. The building was noisy, too. I’d booked a double bed but got two separate beds that couldn’t be pushed together. I was on my own, so it didn’t matter much, but still. The check-in was even worse. I found the entrance through the cafe/restaurant, where a large standing sign partly blocked the doorway. I asked a woman in German if it was the main entrance. She just said, “yes, walk with my colleague,” and waved over someone who immediately started walking off. Nobody asked if I had a reservation or was checking in. The second woman handed me a room key and left. When I asked if I needed to show ID, she mumbled something I couldn’t make out. My German isn’t great, so I asked in English if she’d mind switching languages. She turned her back and snarled, in German, “I can’t understand you,” in a pretty aggressive tone. The next morning, she was about to clean the rooms and practically shouted “SCHLÖSSEL HIER BITTE” (“keys here please”). I handed over the key without saying anything and gave her an evil eye. It was the strangest, most off-putting hotel or pension stay I’ve ever had. I was only there for one night, thankfully. Terrible place, and I wouldn’t send anyone there.
