After a long motorbike ride on back roads from Flachau Austria, I found the hotel on the Bookingdotcom app and stopped to take a look. The warm welcome from the hotelier and the setting right by the market square in the charming medieval town of Wemding (Bavaria) won me over. There’s a secure spot to lock up the bike overnight, and the restaurant serves top Bavarian food at prices that felt like a steal compared with London. You can tell how much pride she takes in the place, from the eclectic LED lighting and ornate decorations to the white and maroon bed linens and mosquito nets above the beds. Couldn’t recommend it more.

The evenings at the Ambi were so good, with live bands, cocktails, and a lively crowd in great spirits. It’s heartbreaking that it’s closed, especially with such a perfect location and no pubs left in Wemding. With some dedication and a feel for events and gastronomy, the town could practically come back to life. Instead, it seems to be fading more and more into a ghost town.

Breakfast was fresh, very good, and plentiful at this small self-service guesthouse. In room (23), I found the electrically adjustable slatted bed bases very comfortable, especially with my 70% disability. The room was on the second floor and there’s no elevator, but the steps were pleasantly low, so it wasn’t too bad.

The bathroom fixtures were ancient, and service in the restaurant and beer garden could have been quicker. During my visit, half the hotel, or rather the grounds, were a major construction site, with lots of noise and little chance to relax, yet the price stayed the same. I’ll set the construction aside and give it 4 stars.
