The attic room has a romantic feel, and we enjoyed our stay as a couple with one child. Its location is handy for seeing all sorts of places around town. For the Harz Mountains highlights, including Rübeland Caves, Büchenberg Show Mine, and the Brocken mountain, experienced, fit, rugged hikers can get around easily. There are also the bus and the Brocken Railway. A friendly staff member stepped in to help when we arrived, which we appreciated. Everything went like a charmed Harz Mountain witch. As others have said, if you forget to dust the sloping ceiling when you get up, you might get a few minor tremors. A hand brush or cleaning cloth would help. Still, everything seems to be taken care of before the next guests arrive, so no need to worry. The white towels were spotless, but didn't have ties. Large safety pins are my suggestion, seasoned hikers carry them anyway. We'd definitely come back.

I've never had a worse vacation rental in Wernigerode. We fell down the stairs because of their poor condition, and the landlady's response was that falls happen. The apartment itself was in completely unacceptable shape. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
We definitely wouldn't book here again. The calls with the landlady were unfriendly and unhelpful, and what a shame. We'd booked the large apartment for six people, but as soon as we arrived the whole place smelled musty. The reason became clear in the bathroom: the bathtub had been taken out and left on its side. The landlady said it was because of renovations and that she couldn't do anything about it, but nobody had told us beforehand. For what we paid, we found that very cheeky. The kitchen light was broken, as were lights in the bathroom and one bedroom. The windows in another bedroom wouldn't open.
The apartment was okay and in a great location, but we never felt welcome, so we weren't comfortable. We arrived with a baby and a dog, after being asked to give an exact arrival time. While we were on the way, we got three phone calls. Then we waited another 10 minutes for the landlady. There was no warm greeting, not even a "good day, I'm..." before she showed us in. We'd specifically picked this apartment so our dog could come, but when the dog walked onto the laminate floor, she gave us a stern look and said everything was brand new. We asked if it was rented to dog owners, since our dog can't fly, and she answered, "yes and no!" She'd assumed we brought a dog bed and that the dog would stay on it the whole time. At that point we wanted to leave. The next morning, she called at 9:00 a.m. and we were finally allowed to open the gates for her so a skip could be collected. There wasn't a broom, so we had to scramble around on all fours with a hand brush. Nobody explained waste separation, where the containers were, or how to return the keys. Very inadequate. What a shame!
Getting there by car was a bit tricky. Nearby parking is paid and usually full, though the train station is only about a 10-minute walk away. The location itself is fantastic, practically right in the center. We stayed in apartment 4, which has two bedrooms and plenty of space. It looked recently renovated, although perhaps not by a professional. That didn't bother me much.
