Hotel Restaurant Schwan

We only came in for dinner, and it was a great meal. The staff were friendly, the Italian wine was good, and there’s an indoor area for smoking and dining, with a cigar lounge at the back.

The location made getting around easy, with the river and old town close by and a cheap parking garage just across the street. Staff were friendly and welcoming, even though English wasn’t always an option; we managed fine. The place had a family-run feel, though I don’t know if it actually is. Our room was mostly comfortable, but finding it through the labyrinth took a bit. The rooms are showing their age, and the pillows were the main letdown. Mine felt like a bag of cotton balls, while the rest of the bed was nice.

Arriving at 2 in the morning with everything closed, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The proprietor made me a ham and cheese plate so I’d have something to eat in the middle of the night. That was amazing. This sleepy German town has a lot to offer, and the hotel is charming, with staff who are so warm and welcoming.

A woman served us first and was friendly enough. Later, when more friends joined, an older man came out. One friend tried to order a wine spritz in English, the drink was listed on the blackboard outside, and the server got angry and raised his voice because they weren’t ordering in German or French, languages he knew. Those friends left, and the people who’d already been served paid and left too. We’d stopped in for a drink or two.
