Staying in Wittnau let me dodge Freiburg’s higher prices, and I liked being able to head back into nature at the end of the day. Having a car would make the location ideal, but the bus to and from Freiburg Hbf runs regularly, Sundays too. With the Deutschlandticket, there’s no extra fare, and the trip takes about half an hour including the walk to the stop. My room has been bright, clean, spacious and comfortable, with a nice homely feel. It’s warmer than I need, even with the autumn heating on, so I’ve opened the windows and switched the heaters off. I’m from Australia, and still find it too warm. The staff have been friendly and helpful. I haven’t tried speaking English with them, but I’m managing with my “mediocre” German and no one has asked me to stop mangling their language yet, haha. The food’s very good, though a bit beyond my budget. Prices are probably normal for the region, especially with everything getting more expensive lately. I treated myself to the wild deer ragout, which the chef apparently hunts and prepares himself. It was worth paying extra for, and came with Spätzle and salad. The locally made ice cream was nice too. I’d recommend the coffee flavor, it tasted like good-quality tiramisu. The sorbet was a little bland and icy for my taste, though maybe that was just the batch.
