Studio, Wyk auf Fohr

The scenery is lovely, and the old thatched-roof houses are well worth a look. Wyk auf Föhr is very clean and great for children, though it is a bit pricey. Island life costs more, I guess. The relaxed Frisian attitude soon rubs off on you. I spent three weeks at the Westfalen Clinic for rehabilitation, and I’d do it again.

We’ve been coming for over 20 years because we love the friendly atmosphere and how at home we feel on the island. These days we stay for less time, though. The beach is magnificent and cycling is fantastic, but service has been slipping. Restaurants seem to keep cutting their opening hours, and some drinks, even at breakfast, felt overpriced. So we eat out less and usually buy food for our holiday apartment instead. I’m sure staff shortages at the restaurants are a big part of it.

There’s plenty to discover in Wyk itself, from the restaurants and shops to its charming little alleyways. It’s also a great base for exploring the island in every direction. Since the island is small, getting to places doesn’t take much of a journey.

We’ve already booked our next stay at the Upstalsboom on Föhr. My wife and I are here for the third time, and each visit has been better than the one before. The whole team is so friendly, from the smiling, welcoming reception staff to the people looking after our room, who were top-notch. Breakfast is fantastic and has everything we need. The leisure activities are amazing too, with instructors who clearly love what they do. We can really unwind here and feel like we’re in paradise.
