Danhostel Hillerod

I liked how peaceful and clean it was, especially being out on the edge of Hillerød. There's plenty of room for parking, and the staff were both professional and friendly. A good place to get away from the city and stay comfortably among nature.

There are board games, a playground, ping-pong and a TV, among other things, and the place is in good shape. The trails around it are quiet too. On our second day, though, all the ping-pong balls were broken. We couldn't get through to them beforehand because we were left waiting on the phone, and a booking mistake meant we had no sheets or towels. With reception unattended for long stretches, there was no way to sort these problems out.

We arrived to find nobody at reception and no envelope with our room key. Someone was kind enough to help us into a room, but it turned out to be booked for someone else. At 1:50 in the night, while we were asleep, the other guests came into our room because they'd been given the same one. They left after about 30 minutes and called the person in charge. At checkout the next morning, the staff didn't even offer an apology. A horrible experience.

A friendly staff member earns the two stars. The stay itself was rough: a group of 15-20 kids from a camp or school were staying at Danhostel, and it was noisy at night, with kids running along the hallway and knocking on our door. Thankfully, our 18-month-old didn't wake up. Then we couldn't sleep because we were itchy all night, possibly from bedbugs or something.
