Milling Hotel Park

A quiet hotel in a nice area, just 100 metres from Middelfart station and about a 12-minute walk from the city centre. The rooms are very small.

We had an easy time parking when we arrived in the evening, but it was a problem the next morning. Breakfast was included and decent. My wife had had an accident, so we asked for a wheelchair-friendly room. They gave us a very spacious one near reception that was comfortable and easy to get around in. Check-in at the small reception just inside the front door was quick, and the young man there was friendly. I could have criticized the furnishings and housekeeping if this had been an expensive room, but I chose not to since it was such good value.

There’s plenty of free ice cream available from 5 am until 1 am the next morning, plus a machine for hot and cold drinks. There’s no milk if you just want hot water for tea, and the free fruit is only apples. Breakfast was a real letdown: the choice wasn’t nearly as broad as in photos from other reviews. The only cooked options were very salty scrambled eggs, bacon rashers and tiny finger-sized sausages, all served cold despite being cooked. Cheese selection was limited, there was very little fruit and the cereal was bland. The pancakes were cold and rubbery. I’d give breakfast two stars at most, and wouldn’t argue with a one-star rating. The outside of the hotel and the grounds look excellent, the lobby is welcoming, and reception staff are polite and friendly. There’s also a large free car park. I nearly rated it three stars, but went with four, probably because of that free ice cream. It falls well short of the five stars many other people have given it. Our small double had two single beds pushed together with old mattresses and memory foam toppers that kept sliding out of place. There’s no air conditioning in the rooms. The curtains are too thin, so the morning light woke me earlier than I’d have liked. I wondered about the dustpan and brush left on the bed, then learned it goes outside the door to show you want the room cleaned. I liked that idea. The shower was okay but weak, and the wet-room floor felt dangerously slippery when wet. There were no slip mats, which isn’t great for anyone with mobility issues. The bathroom door was tatty at the bottom, and the rooms need updating. The WiFi didn’t work at all in room 205, at the front of the first floor. When I told the receptionist, she said I’d entered the wrong password, but I hadn’t, since I’d connected to the WiFi in reception. Apparently the hotel used to be an old army barracks. That adds some interesting history, though it also makes the small rooms make more sense.

Free coffee in the afternoon and ice cream too. There’s a bar with a pool table and other games, and the breakfast and amenities are great. Amazing hotel.
