We rented a private condo in the Dominican Republic and loved the location. It was extremely safe and very well maintained, with private beach lounges and a beach bar and grill. 👌

The beach was nice, and the guards there did a good job moving loungers and tables to suit us. It was too rough to snorkel on this side of the island, though vendors kept pestering people along the beach with offers ranging from sunglasses to excursions. They’d also come right to restaurant tables while people were eating, and staff said nothing. We found many restaurants, tourist shops, grocery stores, and pharmacies within walking distance, and the area felt safe. We were told not to go out at night, so we mostly stayed in then. We used a taxi to and from the airport. We were two adult couples in the three-bedroom, five-bath condo J402 from 2/21/25 to 2/28/25. Two bathrooms were incomplete or unusable. The nice rain shower heads were hard to use because the water pressure was too low, and the hot water was barely above lukewarm, so showers were quick. The living room AC didn’t seem to work, and the main room still hadn’t cooled after three days, so we shut that unit off. The bedroom units worked well. Our electricity bill for seven days was nearly $400 USD. Two bathroom windows had broken latches, so we had to duct-tape them shut. Little lizards on the walls were cute but creepy. Maintenance came several times to deal with a leak in the unit below. Once I returned while they were still there, sitting on the floor playing on their phones. Hopefully that was a one-off after the leak was fixed, but it made me nervous about leaving valuables in my “locked” unit. The bedroom with two double beds had very uncomfortable mattresses. Its ceiling fan only worked with pull chains too high to reach, and there was no light in that room. The loft was hot and had a filthy couch that served no purpose, plus a bathroom that didn’t work. Its small outdoor patio had no furniture, and the outdoor shower was broken. For a week in a place advertised as having five bathrooms, we got just three rolls of toilet paper, no paper towels, no cleaning supplies, and no trash bags. Rain came daily, and a substantial roof leak just outside the front door made the stairwell floor extremely slippery. The elevator was clean, nice, and fast. We couldn’t find instructions for things like the dumpster location, pool hours, TV, or checkout, and never figured out how to use the TV. The front desk wasn’t much help. That was mostly my problem since I don’t speak Spanish and their English was limited. The adjacent restaurant was rude about its chaise lounges. More than once, they told us we couldn’t use them because they were for customers before even asking if we wanted to order. A sign said the restaurant was for Playa Turquesa owners and guests, but it was usually full of people without the Turquesa wristband, so owners and guests couldn’t sit. I don’t mind either way, but they should follow their own policy. Be wary of taxes on goods and services, usually 28%, and exchange rates that vary from place to place.

If you get the chance to go, it’s worth it. The private beach and staff made us feel like we had the place to ourselves, and the grounds and pools were kept up really well. Our host was awesome.

The beaches are amazing, and restaurants and shopping are all nearby. The rooms are beautiful, and we had an excellent host.

The staff were great: helpful, honest, and able to speak English. There are two pools on site, plus a supermarket and a beach bar with excellent food. You can get straight to the beach, although unfortunately it was covered with algae. We stayed five nights in a four-room apartment on the fourth floor. It had a shared kitchen, living room, and balcony, as well as a private balcony facing the ocean, though a few buildings blocked the direct view. Each room had its own bathroom with a walk-in shower. Bring soap or buy some at the local supermarket. The king bed was quite soft. Light came in through the curtains, and noise from people in the kitchen and living room carried loudly, so earplugs and an eye cover are a good idea. Sharing the apartment also meant meeting new people, which added to the holiday.
