Gansevoort Dominican Republic, Playa Imbert

Please be cautious with valuables at The Gansevoort DM. My wife and I learned that the hard way during Thanksgiving weekend in November 2015. We couldn't use the room safe because it had an unfamiliar key and keypad setup with no instructions, and we were rushing out for surfing lessons. I had already put my valuables in it and couldn't open it, so my wife tucked her wedding and engagement rings into the front pocket of her backpack in the living room. We forgot about them until checkout, when the rings were gone. We believe they were stolen, though we don't know exactly what happened. We reported it at the front desk. The manager said staff would search and question the relevant housekeeping workers, then get back to me. Five days after we got home, I still hadn't heard anything, even after sending a reminder email. Two messages to The Gansevoort Group management also got no response. After my third email, the group's COO finally replied, but offered no help beyond saying there had been no other theft incidents at the resort. I felt management did not do what was needed to help recover our valuables or keep us informed, and I'm concerned about how guests' belongings are handled by housekeeping. Apart from that incident, the airport transfer both ways was good, and service was generally good. Staff seemed unprepared to deal with our problem and did not help us. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, but there were small mosquitoes and we both ended up with lots of bites. The pool was kept up well, and the staff there were friendly and helpful. The beach, though, usually had such strong waves that getting into the ocean was impossible. There is only one restaurant, with limited choices and mediocre food. I expected much better quality from The Gansevoort.
