Hotel Conde de Peñalba

The location in the heart of Zona Colonial is excellent, and I liked the good, affordable restaurant downstairs. The rest of my stay was a mess. I booked through Expedia, but the clerk initially couldn't find my reservation and blamed the slow internet. He eventually gave me a room. At 12:30 a.m. he called to say he'd assigned the wrong room type, mentioned he might be charged for the mistake, then abruptly ended the call, saying he'd try to sort it out. Just before 1 a.m., a security guard came to my door and told me to pack and move. The replacement room had a dirty floor. I don't know if the staff were just having a bad day, but the disorganization and lack of consideration were unacceptable. I usually don't leave negative reviews, but this needs to be said. The great location didn't make up for the poor service, and I wouldn't recommend staying here.

The balcony and location were great. It did get noisy until midnight, and the old style AC made some noise too. Still, the location made those flaws easy to overlook.

It's clean, comfortable, and feels safe, with everything in the area close by. Finding street parking during the day is tough because of the strict restrictions, though there's a parking garage nearby.

We liked the rooms as expected, the friendly, helpful staff, and the free Wi-Fi. There's also complimentary coffee in the lobby in the morning. The location is hard to beat, and balcony rooms have amazing views. Noise comes with being so central, especially on weekends and at 7:30 in the morning when the leaf blowers start. We expected it, so it wasn't a problem for us. The walls were thinner than we realized, and we could hear the people in the next rooms easily. The TV didn't seem to get any channels, or maybe we couldn't work it out, but we were usually out anyway. Fantastic stay. We'd gladly return on another visit to Santo Domingo and recommend it to friends and family.
