I booked a room in the “old” section and wouldn’t recommend it. It was dusty and unclean enough to set off my allergies, and the bathroom head was broken.

Ghardaïa’s architecture, heritage, and landscapes are stunning, and the warmth of the Sahara’s people made the trip even more memorable. They were friendly, genuine, and happy to share their culture. At Hotel El Djanoub, I found a peaceful atmosphere that suited a restful stay, and the staff were welcoming and attentive throughout. I highly recommend both the hotel and the city, whether you’re visiting for work or leisure.

The pool was clean, and the bed was comfortable in the renovated rooms. The older rooms are uncomfortable. It’s a modest, comfortable place for anyone after some peace away from city noise, and the dinner was luxurious, but far too expensive for me to recommend. The night rate is also very high and doesn’t match the value. Breakfast was very poor and basic, especially the coffee and milk. Some doors are worn, a few rooms lack toilet paper, there are water leaks, and the bathroom is only average. I also found the staff inattentive toward guests.

I’ve stayed in some really bad hotels, but this was the worst breakfast I’ve had in years.

The hotel is in a great spot, not far from the airport, and the receptionist was great. I also loved the talented artist exhibiting his work there. Dinner was better than breakfast, which wasn’t very good. It has a great history, and I feel kind of bad that it’s managed by the government. The hotel is great, but it could be excellent.
