Xanadu feels like a warm, tropical haven in Bahia, a town that’s up and coming again, you might say. Roberto and his wife were kind to us the whole time, and Soul, the house dog, is the sweetest pup.

Café Artess is now on the ground floor, with excellent service and a lovely, welcoming interior. You can learn about Bahía de Caráquez’s history over a delicious, fragrant coffee. The facilities are comfortable, the staff are incredibly friendly, and congratulations to the owners.

The location is excellent, and with some fixes this could be one of the best spots for backpackers. But it’s a basic hostel right now, with a musty smell and dusty furniture in the lobby. They could do much better.
