Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve & Lodge

We spotted the olonguito and kinkajou, along with about 30 bird species, including toucans, trogons, teenagers and hummingbirds. A side trip for Cock of the Rock brought even more hummingbirds. If birding is your thing, it's worth staying at least two days. We stayed three. It's a nice cloud forest lodge, conveniently close to Quito. You can drop in and pay for admission, meals, or a package that includes transport. The drive takes about two hours, with breakfast on arrival before a walking tour to look for birds.

The staff made this stay special. Gabriel, our guide, was enthusiastic, and the kitchen and maintenance teams were just as friendly and devoted. It was lovely hearing them chat and laugh together. The food was simple, always a soup in Ecuador, but fresh and tasty, with Paola serving it with a smile. Our room was probably one of the best, in the same building as the restaurant, with beautiful views of the forest and volcano. The birds, other wildlife, walking trails, and scenery were fantastic. Bellavista was a highlight of our Ecuador holiday and will stay in our travel memories.

The forest trails are extensive and well kept. On a guided morning walk we spotted Plate-billed Mountain-Toucans and rare orchids. At the lodge, an Olinguito appeared in the evening, and the feeders kept busy with hummingbirds such as the Violet-tailed Sylph. The guides know their stuff. For anyone who loves nature, Bellavista is a must, with staggering biodiversity. It really feels like living in the clouds.

Set in Ecuador's private cloud forest reserve in the Tandayapa Valley, on the northwestern Andean slopes, this beautiful ecotourism spot is about 1 hour 45 minutes by road from Quito. There are well-marked trails to explore, hundreds of bird species to watch, and views across the misty canopy and surrounding valleys. The tours are excellent, and I highly recommend visiting.
